Week 2

Week 2

Welcome to our second weekly blog of 2022. This week's blog theme is the teaching of phonics.

We are excited to introduce to you a new phonics scheme which the children started before Christmas called Little Wandle.

This is a particular scheme that we follow to help the children learn sounds which will subsequently help them read words and simple sentences whilst in Reception. The children have an adult-led phonics session each day which takes place on the carpet. The children then learn to recognise and say a particular sound and then practice writing that sound on its own and in words.

For example, we have recently been looking at the sound 'j'.

As you can see there is a picture that matches the sound which helps the children recognise different sounds. We then practice saying the sound, for example for 'j' we say...

"Pucker your lips and show your teeth use your tongue as you say j j j'.

We finally write the sound and use the matching picture to help us. For example, we say 'all the way down the jellyfish and a dot on his head.'

Since we have returned from the Christmas break we have learnt the following sounds.

Little Wandle also have a website with a section for parents. Please ignore the dates such as Autumn 1 and Autumn 2 as we are currently learning our sounds at a different pace.

If you have any questions about our phonics scheme, please speak to Mr Bartle or Mrs Lush.

We hope you have a wonderful weekend.
