Reception Blog - Pancakes and World Book Day

Spring 2 - Week 1

Parents/Carers,

As Mrs Rudkin is attending the Year 4 Malvern residential this week, we have decided to create a year group blog to celebrate Pancake Day and World Book Day. The children have absolutely loved celebrating these different events throughout the week and it has been wonderful to see how excited the children have been when learning new things.

We started of the week celebrating Pancake Day. We spoke about that it is also called Shrove Tuesday and that it originated from Christians believing that it was the last chance to use up left-over ingredients before Lent. On Tuesday, the children had the opportunity to see Mrs Rudkin and Mr Bartle make pancakes which the children thoroughly enjoyed. To be honest, they liked eating them even more!

On Wednesday, both classrooms were full of excitement with the children discussing their favourite pancake toppings. I think my favourite option was ice-cream, marshmallows AND chocolate spread! We have also been focusing on our oracy skills with children debating which is the best pancake topping. We have been using the following phrases:

  • I agree with... because...
  • I disagree with... because...

Thursday was World Book Day and the staff were so impressed with the amazing outfits the children were wearing. In Reception, we love reading stories everyday but it was lovely to share some of the children's favourite stories from home. They really liked talking about the different characters, events and settings in each book and it was great to see how animated the children were.

In book-bags you will find a World Book Day voucher for your child to spend so they can add a new book to their story collection at home. It would be amazing to hear all about the story your child has chosen, so feel free to bring it into school so it can be read during a story session.

We hope the children had fun this week and please enjoy a selection of photos of this week's events.

Have a great weekend, Mr Bartle
